Soundarya Rajinikanth’s second directorial venture and the all second installment of the VIP franchise are the buzz factors that made VIP 2 one of the most awaited films.
Retaining almost all the cast but with changes in crew, VIP 2 rides high on the highly celebrated sequences of its predecessor. Leveraging social media power to grab attention of the masses, thanga pushpam, drunk nights of Dhanush are a few examples for it.
The story line is not new except a change in the villain. However, having Kajol as the antagonist has added some perks for the film. Kajol, as a super-busy boss of a construction company looks cool in her looks. The Bollywood stalwart has done justice to her role carrying the attitude of a hep boss with great ease and her homework for lip sync almost after two decades of her Tamil debut.
Dhanush and Vivek’s rapport has certainly not lived up to the expectation but has done a decent part in adding humor to the film. The technical crew involving Prasanna GK as the editor and Sameer Thahir behind the lens have shot and tailored the film well.
Despite a good show in Power Paandi, Sean Roldan has disappointed with his tunes. The background score is fine but over usage of it makes us lose interest very soon.
Amala Paul and Samuthirakani have done their roles to perfection. In fact, the female lead who played a supportive role for the male lead has now been portrayed as the menace creator just because of the fact that they have got married.
If the film had some serious story and less dependency over the hit sequences of VIP, VIP 2 could have been a much better film that could have stood up to the expectations.
Verdict: Average entertainer.
